Yaşar Kemal'in söyleyişiyle içinde başkaldırma kurduyla doğmuş bir insanın, mecbur adamın romanı.Eşkıyalığı bırakarak evlendiği Seyran ile bir Akdeniz kasabasına yerleşen Memed, burada milli mücadele kahramanlarından muallim Zeki Nejad'la dostluk kurar. Memed, köylüye zulmeden çeltikçilerle mücadele eden Zeki Nejad'ı öldürten Şakir Bey'i öldürerek yeniden dağa çıkar. Kendini yakalamak için köyleri boşaltarak köylüleri Çukurova'ya süren milletvekili Arif Saim Bey'i de öldürür.
