- Sergüzeşt'i genç, gayretli ve maharetli bir mimarın tecrübe sahibi olmadan önce inşa ettiği bir binaya benzetiniz. Aldanmayacağınızı ümit ederiz. Mizancı Murat Küçük Şeyler'le edebiyatımıza yeni bir soluk getiren Samipaşazade Sezai'nin ilk ve tek romanı olan Sergüzeşt, gerek kurgusu gerekse anlatımıyla edebiyat tarihimizde bir dönüşümün habercisi kabul edilir. Henüz çocuk yaşta Kafkasya'dan getirilip İstanbul'da satılan Dilber'in macerasını XIX. yüzyıl sonu Osmanlı'sında hala sürmekte olan insan ticaretinin birey ve toplum hayatında yol açtığı yıkım üzerinden ustaca anlatan yazar, devrinin sosyo-kültürel yapısına da ışık tutar. Günümüz okuruna yüz elli yıl öncesinden etkileyici sahneler sunan Sergüzeşt'in, yıllar geçtikçe daha çok okunup beğenileceğini umuyoruz.Samipaşazade Sezai (1859-1936) İstanbul'da doğan Sezai'nin çocukluk ve ilkgençlik yılları Maarif nazırlığı da yapmış olan babası Sami Paşa'nın Taşkasap'taki büyük konağında geçer. Bu konak dönemin meşhur fikir adamlarına, yazar ve şairlerine ev sahipliği yapan önemli bir buluşma noktasıdır. Sezai burada pek çok yazar ve şairle tanışır. Özel hocalardan Arapça, Farsça ve Fransızca dersleri alır. Gençlik yıllarında oldukça etkilendiği Namık Kemal ve yakın dostu Abdülhak Hamit'in yenilikçi düşüncelerini benimseyen Sezai, 1880'de Londra Sefareti'ne ikinci katip olarak atanır. Burada Batı edebiyatını, özellikle Shakespeare'in eserlerini inceleme imkanı bulur. Londra'da geçirdiği bu zaman onun düşünce dünyasını ve edebi ufkunu genişletir. 1901'e kadar İstanbul'da Hariciye Nezareti'nde muavinlik görevini sürdürür. İstanbul'da geçirdiği 1886-1901 yıllarında Sergüzeşt'i, Küçük Şeyler'i ve Rumuzü'l-Edeb' i yayımlar. İstanbul'un alafranga dünyasına yönelik ilk köklü saptamalar onun eserlerinde belirir. Sergüzeşt'te esirlik ve özgürlük kavramlarını işlemesi hükümetin takip çemberine girmesine neden olur ve 1901'de Paris'e kaçar, burada Jön Türkler'e katılır.
